  • Springfield Youth Club is helping raise soccer's awareness by sponsoring subscriptions to a pair of soccer publications at a local library. Now, readers can visit Pohick Regional Library in Burke to read Soccer America and Soccer Jr. magazines, with SYC funds, not public taxes, paying the fee. SYC officials hope other clubs in the Washington area will make similar arrangements with their local libraries.

  • The Washington Warthogs have signed indoor soccer veteran "Scorin'" Goran Hunjak to a contract for the 1997 Continental Indoor Soccer League season. Hunjak, a 13-year professional and former midfielder for the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer, played for the Warthogs during the 1994 inaugural season. During that season, Hunjak, a spectacular dribbler and shooter, accumulated 100 points (47 goals, 53 assists) and was named to the All-CISL First Team. The Warthogs hosted the Monterrey La Raza Saturday night at US Airways Arena, winning the season opener 11-6.

  • The US Women's National Team will play its first-ever match in Tennessee on Saturday, Nov. 1 facing long-time European power Sweden at Chattanooga's Davenport Field in Finley Stadium. The USA's last meeting with Sweden was a 2-1 victory on July 23, 1996, at Orlando, FL in the second match of the Olympic Games.

  • The National Capital Soccer League will hold its post-season Board of Directors meeting and election of officers on Thursday, June 19 at 7 pm at Marshall High School in Falls Church, VA. The present candidates for each position are (in alphabetical order) President: Jeff Skigen (VYS) and Chris Smallwood (REST) Vice-President: Jim McGoldrick (WHTN) Secretary: Steve Craig (BSU) and Anne Maynes (MCLN) Treasurer: Roger Ney (MCLN) and Sandy Proteau (ARL). Nominations will also be accepted from the floor.

  • The Washington Warthogs, which recently announced the signing of forward Goran Hunjak, are offering their 1997 individual game ticket prices for all 14 home matches at the USAirways Arena. The season opens on June 14 when the Warthogs take on the two-time defending CISL champions Monterrey LaRaza. Tickets are $12.50 and $15 for adults and $8.50 for children 15 and under. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, or by calling the USAirways Arena box office. The Warthogs averaged 8,030.

  • The US Mens National Team, in preparation for World Cup qualifying, tied Paraguay 0-0 in an international friendly match on June 4 at the Anheuser-Busch Conference and Sports Centre in St. Louis. Paraguay is in first place in the nine-team South American World Cup qualification bracket.

  • Arlington Attack Win Philidelphia Tournament
    The U-10 Girls Attack won the premier division of the 31st Annual Philadelphia Youth Soccer Classic over Memorial Day Weekend. The Attack won all five games they played, allowing only two goals. They won the championship game, against a team from Long Island, New York by a score of 5-0. All Attack players scored atleast one goal; during the tournament. The Attack is coached by Karen Parker. Team members are Kasey Cahill, Bernadette Cronley, Madeline Dale, Morgan Davidson, Emily Harmon, Christina Kirkbride, Laurie Beth Puglisi, Christine Roddy, Carlyn Sylvester, Melissa Westrick, and Amy Wilcox.

  • The Fairfax Women's Soccer Association is hosting its annual Pine Ridge Tournament on June 28-29 at Pine Ridge Park in Fairfax. The tournament, for adult women's teams only, will include Open divisions, Masters divisions (over 30) and a grand Masters division. Youth teams will not be excepted.
