Mexico Earns CONCACAF First Road Win In Final Round Qualifying

A 66th minute goal by veteran Mexican forward Luis Garcia led Mexico to 1-0 victory over El Salvador in San Salvador. The victory was the first for a road team in 14 games of final-round World Cup qualifying play in CONCACAF.

Ramos to Miss USA -El Salvador

MetroStars midfielder Tab Ramos, who suffered a torn left anterior cruciate ligament Nov. 24, will return June 25 for an exhibition game against Alianza of Lima, Peru. Ramos, a member of the U.S. National Team, tore the knee ligament during a World Cup qualifying match against Trinidad-Tobago. The 30-year old Ramos is expected to miss the USA's June 29 World Cup qualifying match at El Salvador. "There are a lot of questions of confidence concerning the knee on my part." said Ramos. "I feel a bit scared." Ramos is scheduled to make his first Major League Soccer appearance July 4 at Tampa Bay.

Drop the Puck

Soccer has displaced hockey as Canada's leading participant sport, according to a recently published report by the Canadian Soccer Association. The CSA registered 536,438 players in 1996, of which 86 percent were under the age of 19. By contrast, Hockey Canada and the independent Metro Toronto Hockey League combined for 533,571 registrations last year. Since the 1994 World Cup, about 10,000 women and girls were registered with the CSA. Last year, women accounted for 167,913 of the organization's players (31 percent of total CSA registrations).

"World Wide Soccer" Debuts on espn2

A new weekly soccer show did World Wide Soccer" debuted last weekend on espn2 The halt-hour show, delivering soccer segments from around the world to a national audience, will air twice a week, usually on Saturday morning and evening. This week's show is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. ET.

U -20S to Battle China Ireland and Ghana at Malaysia '97: The U.S. Men's Under-20 National Team departs today for Malaysia where they will participate In the Sixth FIFA World Youth Championship beginning June 16. U.S. Earn Hard Fought U.S. Women's Cup Championship

Forward Cindy Parlow's headed goal in the 68th minute sparked the U.S. to a hard fought 2-0 victory over Italy in the final game of U.S. Women's Cup '97. Midfielder Kristine Lilly assisted on both goals for the U.S., including, a 90th minute assist to forward Mia Hamm, who has now scored 15 goals in 10 games in 1997. The championship victory for the women concludes a grueling 100-day stretch in which the team played 12 games, across two countries, eight dates and the District d Columbia, while compiling a perfect 12-0 record and a goals for/goals against difference of plus 53 (59 to 6).

U.S. Women's National Team to Face Sweden in Chattanooga Nov.1

The U.S. Women's National Team will play its first-ever match in Tennessee on Saturday. Nov. 1, 1997, facing long-time European power Sweden at Chattanooga's Davenport Field in Finley Stadium. Presented by Kodak, the international friendly begins at 12:30 p.m. ET and will be televised live on the Prime Network. Tickets at the 20,000 seat stadium range from $7-$2O and can be purchased by calling 423/266 6627.

USA vs. Israel in Jacksonville on June 17

The U.S. Men's National Team will gather in Jacksonville, Fla., on Monday, June 16 in preparation for its June 17 match vs. Israel at Alltel Stadium (formerly Jacksonville Municipal Stadium). The match marks the first time the teams have met since Nov. 15, 1973, a 2-0 victory for Israel in Beersheba, Israel. Tickets ($10-$25) for the match can be purchased by calling 904/35 }3309. The U. S. team, to De announced later this week, will stay at the Holiday Inn Airport in Jacksonville (904/741-4404 phone). Israel To Send Top Team to Jacksonville

Israel head coach Shlomo Sharf has selected a 23-man roster to face the U.S. Men's National Team June 17 in Jacksonville, Fla. The roster includes all 14 players that played in Sunday's 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Russia in Moscow. The Israelis are currently 4-2-1 with 13 points one back of the 4-0-2 Russians in European World Cup qualifying Group 5. Single-Game Tickets for U. S.-Costa Rica In Portland 1 on Sale Thursday

Single-game tickets for the United States World Cup qualifying match In Portland on Sept. 7 vs. Costa Rica will go on sale this Thursday at 7 a.m. U.S. Soccer oversold their Initial private ticket sale projections three times over and have increased capacity at Portland Civic Stadium to 27,047 to better meet the demand. The remaining tickets, which are expected to go fast can be ordered by calling 800/99Z-TIXX or 503/224-TIXX in the Portland area.

USA-El Salvador Television Update

The June 29 World Cup qualifying match between the USA and El Salvador in San Salvador will be aired on closed circuit television. The game. scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m. ET, can be obtained through Closed Circuit Network (CCN), phone- 800/897 8181. Univision is scheduled to air a one-hour condensed delay broadcast of the game at 5 p.m. ET. Check next week's Soccer Wire or your local listings for confirmation of the Univision broadcast time.

Three Teams Book Passage to France

Morocco, Nigeria sod Tunisia secure their places in next year's World Cup finds in African qualifiers over the weekend. Morocco and Tunisia gained the single points they needed Sunday while Nigeria's 3-0 win over Kenya in Lagos on Saturday saw them secure the top place in Group 1. Morocco and Nigeria qualify for the World Cup for the second successive time while Tunisia will play in France m years after their last appearance at the World Cup finals in Argentina. Africa's two other representatives in the finds will not be decided until Aug. 17 when the final round of qualiliers are played. Cameroon and Angola will both need to win in group four while South Africa can finish top of group three if they draw at home with Congo in their last match.

Kirovski's Coach Steps Down

Ottmar Hitzfeld announced he was stepping down as coach of Borussia Dortmund on Friday, just over a week after the club won the European Cup. Hitzfeld, who coaches 21-year-old Escondido, Calif., native and U.S. National Team Forward Jovan Kirovski, told a news conference that he would be taking over as sports director at the club. It is not yet known who will take his place as coach.
